LAZERTRAN TRANSFER PAPERS FOR ARTISTS.
For use with toner based colour photocopiers which operate at 200 degrees C or below.
(Please note, that Lazertran is not suitable for colour laser printers as they tend to have an operating
temperature of more than 200 degrees C).

For an up to date list of colour printers found to be suitable. please follow THIS LINK to Lazertran's website.

All Lazertran papers have been specially developed for use with colour photocopiers and are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standard.

LAZERTRAN
A water slide paper that allows the transfer of full colour images onto almost any surface including, paper, canvas, fabric, wax, ceramic tiles, glass, Perspex, sheet metal, plaster, wood, stone and vacuum forming plastics.

LAZERTRAN SILK
A simple iron on transfer for silk and other sheer fabrics giving fantastic detail. It will not stiffen the silk around the image, allowing the cloth to flow naturally. Can also be used to put images on polyclay and metal foil.

TO FIX TO GLASS, CERAMIC TILES, PERSPEX, AND SHINY SHEET METAL
For non-absorbent shiny surfaces, no glue other than the gum on the back of the transfer is required. Simply soak Lazertran in water and slide the transfer onto the carrier. Expel all air bubbles with a rubber squeegee and allow to dry for 24 hours. The image can be varnished for protection with both acrylic and oil based varnish.

TO BAKE ON CERAMICS, GLASS AND METAL TO GIVE A HARD, WATERPROOF FINISH
Copy the image in reverse. Put the sheet of Lazertran with the images on in a hot domestic oven or use a heat gun to make sure the toners are completely fused on the paper before cutting and soaking in water. This will avoid small bubbles later.

Soak the transfer off and apply face down, toners next to the ceramics and wash away any gun on the surface of the decal.

Put in a domestic oven on very low with  the door open to dry out for 15 minutes then close the door for a further 15 minutes. Then increase the temperature as slowly as possible   over about an hour and a half until the decal melts (about 200 degrees C gas mark 7) or 350-400 degrees F. The finish should have a hard glazed appearance. Domestic ovens are not accurate so use the glossy appearance as the final guide.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING WATER BASED ADHESIVE METHOD

FOR PAPER OR CANVAS

1. Stretch your paper or canvas over a flat board. Prime canvas with acrylic primer and for paper, seal with clear acrylic medium to avoid cockling and increase mobility of the transfer.  Watered down P.V.A. may be used instead of acrylic.

Note. Acrylic can be any good quality flexible medium, Liquitex, Spectrum, etc.

2. Trim your image to size and lower, into clean water. The paper will roll up.  Allow to soak for a minute or so.

3. Apply a fresh coat of acrylic to the area you wish to fix the image, with a shorthaired roller.

4. Lift the Lazertran out of the water and partly slide the transfer off the backing sheet.

5.Lay the Lazertran onto the wet acrylic. Position and slide out backing sheet from under the transfer.

6. Position your image, then carefully expel air bubbles with the roller.

7. Allow to dry flat overnight. Matt Acrylic can then be applied to give a flat finish.

The application of overlays is as above.

To apply over oil paint see Fixing with pure turpentine.

PURE TURPENTINE METHOD

TO FIX LAZERTRAN TO PAPER, WOOD, WAX, STONE, PLASTER, LEATHER, PVC, AND DIFFICULT SURFACES WITHOUT ACRYLIC

1.Trim your image to size and lower, wide edge first, into clean water.  Allow to soak for a minute or so.

2. Lift the Lazertran out of the water and make sure you have wiped away any excess moisture.

3. Soak your receiving surface with pure turpentine and slide the transfer onto the surface.

4. For paper, carefully roll flat with a soft roller moistened with pure turpentine and leave overnight. The transfer will melt and migrate into the surface.  Do not over work the transfer, as it will smudge.

5. For surfaces other than paper, for instance rough wood, the melting of the image into nooks and crannies can be helped by brushing the image with pure turpentine. Do not force into holes or curves, as it will do this itself overnight.

6. For putting over existing oil paint, wipe the painting or brush over with pure turpentine. Then lay transfer onto the surface. If too much turpentine is used the image will break up. Always lay flat till dry.  n.b. Turps substitute or white spirit will not work.

USING LAZERTRAN SILK TO TRANSFER AN IMAGE TO POLYMER CLAY

1.Copy your image in reverse onto a sheet of lazertran Silk.

2.Put the image face on the clay and  burnish to make sure of good contact and leave for 30 minutes.

3. Drop the clay with the image attached into a bath of water and leave for 2 minutes. Then  swish the water with your hand until the backing paper floats.

4. Remove the clay from the water and allow to dry for 1 hour.

TO FIX LAZERTRAN TO VACUUM FORMING PLASTIC BEFORE FORMING

Lazertran can be used to put full colour images onto clear and opaque vacuum forms.

1. Soak the Lazertran as usual in water.

2. Slide off the backing paper and lay onto the plastic.

3. Remove all bubbles with a rubber squeegee and allow to dry. This is very important as any moisture under the transfer will boil and blow a hole in the image during forming.

4. When dry, put in former and bring up to temperature gently.

5. Form your plastic as normal.

The image will weld into the plastic and will not split or crack.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING LAZERTRAN SILK

When ironing on our transfer paper you must have them printed in reverse or mirror in order that any text is transferred correctly.

1. Iron silk flat.

2. Lay silk over your image and iron until the silk is stuck to the image. Use a hot iron.

3. Place the silk in clean water, paper side down and leave until the paper falls off.

4. Lift the silk carefully from the water and lay face down onto a cloth. Allow the iron to cool and  iron gently from the back to dry the silk.

5. When dry  return the iron to hot, turn the silk over and place a sheet of baking paper/parchment, not waxed or old fashioned greaseproof, over the image.

6. Iron through the paper then allow to cool. Then peel off. This method produces a beautiful result for surface pattern.  The silk can be rinsed in warm water but will not take a vigorous wash.

FOR HEAVIER FABRICS ordinary LAZERTRAN can be ironed on.

1.Place Lazertran face down on the cloth.

2. Set iron to wool/cotton and iron onto the cloth until it is well stuck.

3. Wet the backing paper and peel off. Wipe away gum from image and allow to dry.

4. Place baking parchment, not greaseproof paper, over image and iron. Allow to cool then peel off baking parchment and repeat until the image sinks into the cloth.

This method can be used for needlepoint canvas and tapestry canvas as a guide.

LAZERTRAN AS AN ETCH RESIST

1.Copy image in black and negative using a colour photocopier onto a sheet of Lazertran. Now you should make sure the toner have been melted onto the lazertran properly by putting the sheet into a hot oven. In a short time the black toner will go shiny. This will avoid bubbles forming later in the method. Now cut to size of your etching plate.

2. Soak in water, for a minute or so, then place the transfer, image side down, onto the degreased plate, slide off backing paper, then, using a soft rubber squeegee, expel all air bubbles, creases and moisture.

3. Put in a domestic oven and increase the temperature from zero as slowly as possible until the  transfer melts and gets shiny, then allow to cool. This will take at least 1 hour. The first 100 degrees are crucial and must not be rushed as this can cause bubbling.

4. Place the plate in a bath of pure turpentine and wash away the decal, leaving only the toners on the plate. You will feel the clean metal under your fingers. All traces of the slimy decal must be removed. This will take about 20 minutes.

5. Lift out and carefully wash off turpentine in warm soapy water.

An aqua tint can now be applied if required.

You are now ready to etch.

Before printing remove toners with solvent, or heat until melted and wipe off with rag and white spirits. (Nail polish remover or wintergreen oil work well).

Note. This method can also be used on glass and metal if you want a full colour image and wish to remove the decal.

LAZERTRAN SILK AS AN ETCH RESIST

This is a simpler way to transfer toners to a plate to act as an acid resist although fine tones may be lost.

1. Copy your image in black and negative onto a sheet of Lazertran Silk paper.

2. Trim to size then iron the image onto a degreased plate until well stuck. Then whilst still hot, lower into water.

3. Allow the backing sheet to soak off then carefully lift from the water and allow to dry.

4.Now reheat to ensure adhesion of toners.

An aqua tint can now be applied.

You are now ready to etch. Before printing remove toners with solvents, or heat until melted and wipe off with rag and white spirits.

LAZERTRAN SILK WITH PHOTO SPRAY MOUNT

Lazertran Silk can be applied to all kinds of surfaces using  Photo spray mount.

Have your image printed in reverse or mirror. Cut image to size. Apply spray mount onto the image then stick down onto surface. You can iron through the backing sheet if applying to cloth to make sure of good adhesion.

Wet backing sheet and peel off.

Lazertran silk can also be put on skin using stage  Spirit Gum in the same way as above, obviously not using an iron.
