The Printmaker's Christmas (HB) HJ Jackson

Ref: 34100

Few of the greetings cards featured in this book can be described as conventional, but neither can the artist who created them. The imaginative and often complex designs reflect the artist’soffbeat sense of humour, magpie-like hoarding habits, considerable talent and plenty of practice. As a printmaker specialising in hand-burnished linocuts, Norfolk-based HJ Jackson has all of the tools necessary – both physical and mental – to make limited-edition cards for family, friends and those other people he wishes to impress. There is a long tradition in Britain of artist-made greetings cards that will hopefully continue well beyond the point at which commercial Christmas cards have been replaced by festive Tweets and E-cards. 'A Printmaker's Christmas' reproduces all of the artists's greetings cards created over six decades.

Printmaker's Cat (SB)

Ref: 34120

Captured on the pages of this, a new version of a highly original book are 330 etchings, engravings, woodblocks, linocuts, silkscreen, collagraphs and lithography from 56 UK printmakers. All feature cats as the dominant or significant subject. Many are witty or whimsical; some bold, others subtle. Most depict aspects of feline behaviour that will be familiar to those who share their homes with cats.

The artists themselves include in these pages their experiences and anecdotes. They also attempt to explain what it is that makes the domestic cat such a popular subject in printmaking. Leonardo da Vinci probably got it right nearly five centuries ago when he said that “the smallest feline is a masterpiece”. His view of the larger cat wasn’t recorded.

Richard Bawden, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, Linda Richardson, GlynnThomas, Alex Johnson, Yvonne Skargon, Rob Barnes, Chris Sinden, Alison Read, Hilary Paynter, Sarah van Niekerk, Miriam Macgregor, Hilke MacIntyre, Kay McDonagh, Geri Waddington, Sanchia Lewis, Angela Harding, Pat Schaverien, Cordelia Jones, Helen Moore, Vanessa Lubach, Mychael Barratt, Chloe Cheese, Victoria Woodward, Martin Leman and many more...

Darren Rees is an accomplished wildlife painter, a long-time member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and fan of the ice and snow. He had earlier visited the High Arctic to paint the aniamls and environment. In 2015, he became Artist in Residence for the Scott Polar Reserch Institute aboard the Royal Navy's HMS Protector on patrol in the Far South. During a month-long voyage from the Falklands through Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula, he observed many species of bird and mammal at close quarters. Five species of penguin were painted during the trip, along with various albatross and petrels. Darren drew and painted Elephant Seals, Fur Seals, Minke and Humpback Whales, plus some majestic ice landscapes. Our book ICE BOUND forms an illustrated record of his voyage through the icy waters of the Far South, complete with the artist's diary entries and working sketchbooks.

HJ Jackson was born in 1938 in the Norfolk town of Kings Lynn. He lived in a railway house at Harbour Junction, the son of a second-generation railwayman. At school in 1953 he cut his first piece of lino and produced his first print, which helped him secure a place at the Norwich School of Art. This book looks back at more than 60 years of printmaking. Afloat & Ashore contains a representative selection of John’s 200-plus surviving prints, accompanied by a profile of an artist for whom the phrase ‘a colourful character’ could have been invented. This is no Norfolk scenic guide, railway retrospective or fisherman’s almanac, although elements of all these things are present, alongside a discussion of John’s printmaking technique. John is a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and has had a long involvement with Norwich Print Fair as contributor and curator. His support for the arts is unstinting, and his enthusiasm infectious.

Fine Print (SB) 20 Years of Norwich Art Fair

This book is a celebration of the printmaker’s craft, reproducing highly diverse work by 55 artists with different interests, influences and techniques. The beauty of printmaking is variety and variation, even within editions created by the same artist from the same block or plate. Some readers will be new to printmaking, but printmaking itself isn’t new at all. Etchings, woodcuts and engravings go back centuries and have always formed an important part of original artistic endeavour. Certain techniques are admittedly newer, but even linocuts predate Picasso! 'Fine Print' is also a tribute to one of Britain’s most enduring and successful specialist art collectives. Over two decades, The Norwich Print Fair has helped educate and entertain. It has introduced the many forms of original print to the uninitiated, raising awareness of often overlooked art forms and enabling visitors to its annual shows to acquire high-quality affordable art.

Realistic Abstracts - Kees Van Aalst

Realistic Abstracts - Kees Van Aalst

Ref: 3622

Kees Van Aalst

This book introduces the concept of realistic abstract painting - a loosely impressionistic form of painting that leaves much to the imagination of the viewer. The subject, though recognisable, is executed with freedom and fluidity, resulting in a painting that is far from photographic. It has been described as the 'grey' area between figurative and abstract painting, yet there is nothing dull about this style, as the numerous colourful examples in this book show.

Aimed at those with some experience of painting, all the examples in this book use various forms of water-based media, including gouache, acrylics and watercolours.

Designed to inspire, this book will stimulate your imagination; encourage you to try out the various methods described; and help you develop your own way of painting in this exciting style.

Numerous colourful examples of works of art by various artists Clear, in-depth descriptions and analysis of realistic abstract painting Includes examples using a wide range of water-based media, including watercolours, gouache and acrylics.
