SolarFast dyes are light-sensitive and only develop color and become permanent upon exposure to sunlight (UV). This unique property means SolarFast may be used to create remarkably detailed photographs, photograms and shadow-prints on paper or fabric by harnessing the power of the sun! Anything you place on the painted surface to block the light will create a print in a matter of minutes, whether thats a solid object (toys, tools, plants, lace, etc.), a photographic negative (an image digitally printed onto a transparency) or shadow (from folds in the fabric or a 3D object).
SolarFast is also great for painting, tie dyeing, screen printing, stamping, batik and moreno heat setting, chemical or steam fixing necessary. The dye leaves fabric completely soft to the touch. On paper, SolarFast has zero relief and will not affect the texture of the surface whatsoever, making it a powerful tool for mixed-media arts.
HOW IS IT USED?
*Apply SolarFast to fabric or paper using a brush, sponge, brayer or squeegee. While still damp, expose the design to sunlight and watch the color magically appear!
*Place objects on the coated surface prior to exposing to block development and create photograms. Any object that casts a shadow will create an image.
*Use a film negative to create permanent photographs on paper or fabric. Prints are washable and lightfast.
For screen printing applications, use SolarFast Thickener.
all natural fibers, including: cotton, linen, canvas, silk, hemp, wood,
rag papers and more
SolarFast Thickener is used to increase the viscosity of SolarFast Dyes for screen printing applications. This is the easiest dye based system for screen printing available.
No heat setting required
No steam setting or chemical fixing required
Leaves fabric completely soft
Lightfast, washable and permanent
Cleans up easily with water
Never permanently dries in screen
Beautiful print surface compared to traditional pigment-based inks
Zero relief on paper
Process allows for unique effects *That cannot be achieved with any other ink system
Instructions: In a separate container, slowly add SolarFast Thickener to SolarFast dye, stirring vigorously. Use up to 1 tablespoon/14.79 ml thickener per 4 fl oz/118.29 ml dye or until desired consistency is achieved. Do not add water. Print as usual. While still damp, expose print to sunlight or UV light, as directed in SolarFast dye instructions. After Exposure, wash in hot water with SolarFast Wash, as directed.
When working with SolarFast Dyes our Wash removes undeveloped dye from prints and reduces the risk of backstaining during washing. This is especially important for preserving white areas and highlights when making photographic prints on fabric or paper.
Instructions: For machine washing, use 3-4 capfuls (24 ml) per load. Set washer to hot for best results. For front loading machines with a pre-wash flush, add SolarFast Wash between and the flush and wash cycles. For hand washing fabric or paper, submerge in hottest water possible, add 1-2 capfuls (10 ml) SolarFast Wash, agitate constantly and keep water flowing 10 minutes.
